Abstract
This article is based on a qualitative study of students’ experiences with the transition from lower to upper secondary school in vocational programmes. The educational debate in Norway has recent years been concerned with students changing programmes or drop out from upper secondary school, and different actions have been taken to reduce the problem. This article discusses the transition to upper secondary school from a student perspective. The analysis shows that lower secondary school has a potential to give students a better foundation for choosing programmes in upper secondary school by focusing on interest development. There is also a potential for strengthening the students’ self-efficacy and motivation for vocational education through the subject content and teaching methods.
 
Artikkelen er basert på ein kvalitativ studie av ungdomsskuleelevar sine opp-levingar av overgangen til vidaregåande skule, yrkesfaglege program. I den norske utdanningsdebatten har det dei siste åra vorte sett søkjelys på årsaker til fråfall og feilval i vidaregåande skule, særleg innafor yrkesfaglege program, og ulike tiltak for å minske dette er sette i verk. Denne artikkelen drøftar overgangen til vidaregåande skule ut frå eit elevperspektiv. Analysen viser mellom anna at grunnskulen har eit potensial for å gje elevar eit betre grunn-lag for val gjennom å fokusere på interesseutvikling, og å styrke elevane sine meistringserfaringar og motivasjon for yrkesfaglege utdanningar gjennom innhald og arbeidsmåtar i fag.
